For some time now, especially on social networks, there have been voices calling for the consumption of Tunisia. The aim is to support the Tunisian dinar. But how to recognize a Tunisian product? Does the barcode starting with 619 really mean that the product is Tunisian? What about those who invest in Tunisia but whose final products are not of Tunisian origin?
According to Soufiane Tekaya, CEO of GS1 Tunisia (TuniCode), not all products with barcodes starting with 619 (prefix) are produced in Tunisia, as one might think. This prefix only means that the company is Tunisian.
The reverse is also true, there are locally produced products whose barcode does not start with the aforementioned code. “The company that owns the trademark (or has the right to use it under a contract) must code its articles. This company can be a manufacturer, importer, wholesaler or distributor who has its products produced domestically or abroad.”
The barcode is important because it enables product traceability and identification. However, the only way to be sure that the product was produced in Tunisia is to indicate that it was produced in Tunisia or made in Tunisia (صنع في تونس).
